Chapter6

Kyra slammed her purse down hard on her kitchen counter and leaned her head on her fist. Her temples throbbed from the pounding music, the alcohol, and most of all from the ugly incident involving X and Lucius Diamond. She and X were the talk of the party and not at all in a good way. X had once again made an ass of himself and had, in turn, made her look like a fool.

“Damn you, X!” she cursed aloud.

Things between them had been going so well. The party was supposed to have been X’s “coming out” of sorts. It was his chance to take his place among the industry elite and show them what he was made of. When Kyra had first seen him at the party, he had looked perfect. His clothes were impeccable, his mannerisms calm and charming. He looked and acted like a serious musician with true talent rather than a screw-up no-talent hack with only a wild persona to bank on. But then he had to go and blow it.

Of all the people at the party to pick on, X had to choose Lucius Diamond. Diamond was not someone who took an insult lightly. He was a powerful player and had enough connections to see that X and Kyra never worked in the music business again.

Kyra groaned and rubbed her aching temples. She needed some aspirin and a good night’s sleep. She reached into the cabinet over her sink and pulled out a bottle of white pills, popped a couple into her mouth and washed them down with some cold water. Sleep, she knew, would be much more difficult to come by.

Her attempt to apologize and clean up X’s horrible mess had not gone as well as she had hoped. Lucius would not even look at her much less speak to her. Getting on Lucius Diamond’s bad side was never a good idea and she had been toeing that line for quite a while after they had broken up. Now with the help of X, she had earned a firm spot on Diamond’s shit list.

Kyra groaned again and blearily made her way to her bedroom to crash for the night. She just wanted to sleep until the whole thing blew over.

“But I doubt I can sleep for ten years.” she told herself.

She had just kicked off her heels when she heard a knock at the door.

“Oh good god,” she moaned. “What now?”

Kyra padded quickly to the door and swung it open, frowning when she saw who stood behind it.

“What do you want, X?” she asked coldly. “I really don’t want to talk to you right now.”

“Please, Kyra,” the rocker begged. “You have to let me explain what happened.”

Kyra shook her head at him. “No, I don’t.” she told him. “It doesn’t matter. You punched a very important man in the face in front of a crowd of people. There is nothing you can say that will change that fact.” She paused, gazing up into X’s deep blue eyes.
